Understanding Grade 12 Physical Sciences
This Grade 12 Physical Sciences collection contains 133 past papers and 67 marking memoranda across 12 examination years (2015โ2026). The collection has recorded 989 downloads.
Grade 12 study is more effective when past examination papers are treated as evidence of how knowledge is assessed rather than as a substitute for learning the subject itself. The resources on this page can be used to study the structure of questions, practise under examination conditions and review answers against available marking memoranda.
The origins of Physical Sciences
Physical Sciences brings together two closely related branches of natural science: physics, which investigates matter, energy, motion, forces and interactions, and chemistry, which investigates substances, their properties and the transformations they undergo. Modern physics and chemistry developed through centuries of observation, experimentation, mathematical modelling and increasingly precise measurement.
What is Physical Sciences?
The school subject introduces learners to scientific models used to explain physical and chemical phenomena. It combines conceptual understanding with quantitative problem-solving and experimental reasoning. A strong learner is expected to move between words, diagrams, equations, measurements and evidence.
Physical Sciences in the South African curriculum
Physical Sciences is an approved FET subject under South Africaโs National Curriculum Statement and has its own CAPS document. The DBE identifies CAPS as the framework that specifies what is taught and assessed in approved school subjects.
The National Curriculum Statement Grades Rโ12 is designed around progression, active and critical learning, high knowledge and skills, meaningful application of knowledge and the development of learners who can analyse information, solve problems and communicate effectively. CAPS provides the subject-specific framework within that broader national curriculum.
What makes Physical Sciences distinctive?
Physical Sciences is unusual because it requires several forms of reasoning simultaneously. A learner may need to understand a physical principle, select an equation, manipulate the equation algebraically, substitute measured values, calculate an answer and then decide whether the answer is physically sensible.
How to study Physical Sciences effectively
Build understanding from principles rather than memorising formula lists. For numerical questions, identify the known and unknown quantities, choose the relevant relationship, rearrange where necessary, substitute values with units and inspect the final result. For chemistry, connect symbolic equations and terminology to the actual processes they represent.
What Grade 12 assessment requires
The subject combines scientific knowledge with application and problem-solving. Examination preparation should therefore include conceptual questions, calculations, interpretation of diagrams and experimental or scientific reasoning rather than calculations alone.
The Department of Basic Education's examination guidance is intended to clarify the scope and depth of content assessed in the external Grade 12 NSC examination. It should be used together with the relevant CAPS documentation rather than treated as a replacement for the curriculum.
Physical Sciences past papers and memoranda
This collection contains 133 past papers and 67 marking memoranduma where available.
A useful revision cycle is to attempt a paper without notes, mark it afterwards, classify every lost mark by cause and then return to the relevant topic. This turns a past paper into a diagnostic tool rather than simply another worksheet.
Marking memorandum coverage currently stands at approximately 50% of the available past papers. Where a memorandum is available, use it after completing the paper rather than while answering it.
November and supplementary examination papers
The collection contains more than one examination session. November papers form part of the main annual NSC examination cycle, while additional examination sessions can provide further opportunities for practice and expose learners to alternative wording, contexts and question combinations.
Do not assume that a supplementary paper is simply a duplicate of a November paper. Treat every paper as a separate assessment exercise and use the different questions to identify whether you genuinely understand the underlying topic.
Where Physical Sciences can take you
The subject provides foundational knowledge for understanding energy systems, materials, medicine, electronics, chemical processes, environmental systems, engineering and many technologies used in modern society.
Possible areas of further study and employment include engineering, medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, physics, biotechnology, environmental science, materials science and scientific research. The actual admission requirements for a qualification depend on the institution and programme, so subject choice should always be considered alongside the current requirements of the qualification you intend to pursue.
Curriculum and source note
This page is intended as an educational guide and revision resource. Subject-specific curriculum requirements, examination scope and assessment rules can change through official amendments and examination documentation. For authoritative curriculum information, learners and educators should consult the South African Department of Basic Education and the applicable CAPS documentation for the subject and language level concerned.
